  Nanjing , abbreviated as Ning , is situated amid a hilly area in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River , at 32° 03' north latitude and 118°47' east longitude. To its east is the fertile area of South Jiangsu Province , and to its west the Wannan hilly area (southern part of Anhui Province ); the valley of the Tai Lake is to its south and the Jianghuai plain to its north. The golden waterway of the Yangtze River runs through its territory; Nanjing port is the largest port on China 's inner rivers; it is only 380 kilometers from Nanjing to the mouth of the Yangtze River.
